Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Springs Chix with Stix hockey team sharpened its edge for a late-season run last weekend by topping the Denver University Pioneers and the Colorado Synergy in two road games.
The local women's team will cap off the regular season this Saturday at home against Vail and then head to Microsystems Arena at the Promenade for this year's state women's tournament April 20-22.
But right now the team is celebrating its two recent wins.
On April 6, the team topped the University of Denver Pioneers at Magness Arena in a 9-2 game.
The Chix scored four goals in the first period, three in the second and two in the final frame. Diane Dwire led the scoring with four goals, Heidi Chapman added two and Kit Rice, Cathy Wiedemer and Liz Schnackenberg all scored once each.
Chapman, Lee Cox, Sheila Cahur, Sue Heineke, Beth Leys, Rice, Julia Wallace and Val Dietrich all had assists in the game. Jen Rose, who was filling in for a resting Carol Vittore, allowed just two goals. Vittore is expected to return to the Chix lineup this weekend against Vail.
Vittore has faced 460 shots this season and recorded 411 saves.
The local women kept things rolling on April 7 with a 6-1 win over the Colorado Synergy.
In that game, Schnackenberg's first period hat trick gave the Chix all the room they would need. Cahur scored the other goal for the Chix. Schnackenberg leads the team in scoring with 20 goals and 14 assists.
In the second, Steamboat's Dietrich and Rene Dupree both scored to extend the lead. Meanwhile, Dwire took over duties in the net and allowed just one second period goal. Cox and Leys both had assists in the game.
The Chix will wrap up the regular season this weekend with a game against Vail. The contest will begin at 1:15 p.m. at Howelsen Hill.
