Sailors soccer team tops Huskies, 2-0

— Steamboat Springs stayed unbeaten in league play Tuesday, downing the Battle Mountain Huskies, 2-0.

The Sailors are on a four-game winning streak, which dates back to their first league victory against the Glenwood Springs Demons March 27.

They are 4-0 in the Western Slope 4A conference.

The Sailors got off to a slow start against the Huskies, missing on a number of shot opportunities, coach Jim Dudley said.

But Julie Wernig got things rolling in the second half, scoring at the 58-minute mark to put the team on top, 1-0.

Nikki Garth then booted in the second goal on an assist from Andrea Len with about 13 minutes remaining.

"I'm just really pleased," Dudley said. "Our defense now in eight games this season has allowed only three goals. "

Tuesday's victory in Avon, Dudley said, was keyed by Abby Fritz, Maggie McElhinney, Lia Utu and Cassidy Kurtz.

Steamboat has one more road contest on its schedule before it begins a five-game home stint.

On Saturday, the Sailors play the Palisade Bulldogs at 11 a.m. at Palisade.

The junior varsity game follows at 1 p.m.

Steamboat's varsity team enters the Palisade game with a 6-1-1 record.
