Tuesday, September 19, 2000
Steamboat Springs Watching a 14-point lead slip in the second half against Eagle Valley High School on Monday, the Steamboat Sailors junior varsity team came up big in overtime, pulling out a 34-28 win over the Devils at home.
Led by the play of Joel Adams, who passed for 150 yards, the Sailors improved their record to 2-0 on the season.
Steamboat led Eagle Valley 26-12 at halftime, before an aggressive Devils' offense tied the score at 28-28 with about 1 minute remaining in the contest.
The teams were still tied at the end of regulation. In overtime, the Devils threatened to take the lead. The Steamboat defense blocked an Eagle Valley field goal, though, and the offense went to work.
Patrick Rogers' 5-yard touchdown sealed the victory for the Sailors, who now play Soroco High School away on Thursday, where they will face the Rams' varsity team.
The Sailors defense on Monday was led by the play of Wayne Cluster, David May, Cooper Howard and Rogers.
Chris Dombey caught four passes for 100 yards and Patrick McMahon scored on a 37-yard option for the offense.
Will Zimmerer, Casey Roach, Ryan Hochreiter and Tyler Dalton had key performances, also.
Kickoff for the Soroco game is at 6 p.m.
