Sailors kick up heels in opener


The Steamboat Springs cross-country teams were in action on Saturday, both finishing among the top five teams in a tournament in Leadville.
More than 40 teams from around the state gathered to run at Lake County High School, where the Sailors opened their 2000 season.
Nicki Murch was the Sailors top finisher for the girls team with a time of 23 minutes, 3 seconds. Murch finished second overall in the race. Bryn Weaver placed second for the Sailors in a time of 23:47, and finished ninth overall. Other Steamboat runners were Jenny Stanford with a time of 25:07, and Emily Hines at 25:28.
The girls team was without runners Rachel Starr and Jessica Philip.
Nathan Proper was the boys team's top finisher, crossing the line in fifth place in the boys' unlimited race. is time was not available.
Other Steamboat runners were Tyler O'Leary, who finished eighth with a time of 19:35; Kyle Jespersen with a 20:09 time, and Eddie Van Baak at 20:50.
Sailors coach John Smith said his team put forth a tremendous effort at Lake County.
"It was a major confidence booster going into next week's meet," Smith said.
The Sailors will host the Steamboat Springs Invitational at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 16.
