Program benefits young skiers

— Steamboat's Little Toots program, which offers ski instructions to toddlers, is holding registration for future ski lessons at Mt. Werner and Howelsen Hill.
Children ages 3 1/2 through kindergarten can partake in lessons at Mt. Werner that start Dec. 7. Registration, which is $75, runs through Nov. 28.
Children must have turned 3 years of age by June to be eligible for the lessons.
The Mt. Werner lessons include five three-and-a-half hour sessions on Tuesday afternoons and Thursday mornings. Toddlers will be provided snacks and juice after each session.
The Little Toots program, which is part of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, also offers lessons at Howelsen Hill that begin Jan. 3 and Feb. 7. Each lesson is two hours long and runs on Wednesdays for five weeks.
Registration is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The cost for the Howelsen lessons is $65.
Program director Heather Yeager said the Howelsen and Mt. Werner programs generally attracted 150-180 children.
"It's great for the kids," Yeager said. "They all get the foundation for skiing here and they have a lot of fun. They're with kids their age, and they're developing new skills and making new friendships."
