Steamboat Springs Steamboat Springs blanked Battle Mountain 3-0 Thursday night in Avon and clinched the conference championship.
The Sailors (11-2-1 and 8-1) enjoyed an outstanding performance by goalkeeper Andrew Litzau, who kept the Battle Mountain players frustrated all night. Litzau finished the match with 11 saves.
Mike Rinn dished out three assists, including one to Ben Beall at the 7-minute mark of the first half that started the team's scoring attack. Beall was on fire during the match, said coach Rob Bohlmann.
"He was just a flame on the right flank," Bohlmann said. "We just had an absolute solid performance from the whole group."
Jason Flower knocked in his ninth goal of the season at the 14-minute mark of the match, and Jason Sirois added a goal three minutes into the second half. The defense was keyed by Rod Beall, Rob Zehner, J.J. Simon and Andrew Johnston.
Sailor John Hottenroth summed up Steamboat's mentality as the playoffs near: "I think we have the team to beat this year."
