Oak Creek could see recycling service

— The town of Oak Creek has received a new bid for trash pickup from Waste Management Inc. and for the first time curbside recycling will be offered to south Routt County.
Trustees must choose from five different options in a two-year contract and four options for five-year contracts.
Mayor Deb VanGundy identified option four in the two-year contract as the one that she liked.
That will cost residents $13.75 a month and includes residential waste collection, Oak Creek cleanup day and a commercial container provided to the town.
Trustee Charlie Bevan agreed, but also thought option two could be a possible choice. That is basically the same deal, but an optional $8 more a month for curbside recycling every other week.
None of the prices include operating expenses or disposal costs from Twin Landfill, which the town would have to absorb. Not everyone likes that idea.
"I don't see any reason that the town of Oak Creek should subsidize a monopoly," Trustee Mike Kien said.
VanGundy agreed that it was an issue, but the town couldn't be without trash services.
Waste Management bought out High Country Roll Off in June, making it the only trash-hauling business left in Routt County. The company agreed to honor the High Country contract until it ran out this month. Then it would renegotiate a deal.
High County underbid Waste Management by $2 last year to gain contracts in Oak Creek and Hayden.
Trustees will make a decision at the end of the month on which option they will take.
