Five members of the Steamboat Springs High School girls soccer team were honored by the coaches in the Western Slope Conference this month.
Liz Masterson, Jessica Fritz and Nikki Garth were all named to the all-conference team. Maggie McElhinney and Jessica Johnson were named to the team as honorable mentions.
"It's a good number," Sailors coach Jim Dudley said. "We had a few more last year, but we didn't win the conference this time."
Fritz led the team in scoring this season with 18 goals. The junior played the outside halfback position and kept other teams in the conference on guard with her speed outside and driving shots.
Masterson played forward for the Sailors and was second on the team in scoring with 12 goals.
Both players were juniors this year and are expected to return to the team next season.
Freshman Nikki Garth also earned top honors for the conference.
Dudley said it is rare for a freshman player to get the honor, but it isn't unheard of. Several Steamboat Players have been named to the all-conference team in the past.
"He scoring numbers were pretty average," Dudley said. "But the other coaches recognized her hard work on the field and honored her for it. "
Steamboat also had two additional juniors get honorable mention recognition.
McElhinney played the sweeper position and helped anchor the Sailors defense which only gave up two goals in conference play this season.
"She stepped into a tough position when Bernadette Norman went down," Dudley said. "We couldn't have asked for any more from her this season."
Johnson was also honored by the conference. She played the stopper, mid-field and forward positions for the Sailors this year.
