— A 23-year-old Craig man was cited for careless driving after rear-ending a truck on U.S. 40 near Hayden on Wednesday and causing a three-car wreck with minor injuries.

Colorado State Patrol trooper Jason Wunsch ticketed Omar Payan after he ran into a Ford F250 pickup truck with a flat-bed trailer at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Wunsch said the pickup driver, Paul Ledbetter, 59, had stopped in traffic and was signaling left to turn into his driveway off U.S. 40 just west of the Mt. Harris pull-out.

Wunsch said Payan, who was also driving a Ford F250 with a flat-bed trailer, saw the other truck but couldn't stop in time, skidding 260 feet before colliding with Ledbetter's truck and pushing it off the road.

Payan then skidded across traffic and head-on into a Cadillac Deville driven by 15-year-old Teri Bourdette of Craig, who was learning to drive with her mother. Wunsch said Bourdette had come to a stop when she saw the wreck happening in the east-bound lane ahead of her.

All the people involved were wearing seat belts.

Ledbetter and a passenger in his truck were treated for neck and back strain at Yampa Valley Medical Center and released the same day.

The Cadillac received minor front-end damage. Wunsch said Ledbetter's truck sustained moderate to extreme damage to the rear end and he said Payan's truck was probably totaled.
