Tigers gear up for state title run at Pueblo meet

Hayden Tigers tracksters raced to another set of school records and personal bests last weekend.

Eight Hayden athletes qualified for the state track meet by posting top three finishes at the regional in Grand Junction on Friday and Saturday, May 12-13. Additionally, nine Tigers set new school records.

"They were superb," coach Kevin Kleckler said. "This is the largest group of athletes I've taken to the state meet in the seven years I've been coaching."

The girls placed ninth out of 16 teams at the meet.

Once again, Jessi Babish, Jeanette Miller, Kristin Brown, and Jaci Etzler set a new school record in the 800-meter medley relay. Their time of 1 minute, 57.12 seconds earned them a second-place victory and a ticket to the state meet.

Brown, Etzler, Miller, and Babish took first place in the 400-meter relay with a time of 53.13 seconds, and will be running the race at the state meet as well. The relay team is ranked No. 1 in the state in the 2A division.

Freshman Jaci Etzler qualified as an individual in the 100-meter dash. Her third-place time 13.26 seconds was not her best of the season, but Coach Kleckler is sure she is on her way to breaking a school record.

The boys placed seventh out of 16 teams at the regional meet.

Joel Wixson took two second-place finishes in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, with times of 11.70 and 23.60 seconds, respectively, and qualified for the state meet in both events. Wixson is ranked No. 2 in both events in the state in the 2A division.

Wixson, Jacques Denker, Glen Frentress, and Matt Walden also qualified for the state meet with a 400-meter relay time of 46.71 seconds.

The same four will also race in the 800-meter relay in the state meet, which they ran in 1:36.68.

Frentress, Mark Murphy, Adam Reck and Nathan Deepe broke a school record in the 3,200-meter relay in 9:50.55.

Deepe broke his own record in the 3,200- meter run in 11:35:55.

State competitors will leave for Pueblo May 18. The meet will be at Clark Stadium in Pueblo May 19 and 20.
