Oak Creek tourney final stop for Peewees


— The season will come to a close for the Steamboat Springs Peewee wrestling team this Saturday in Oak Creek at the Soroco Invitational.

The local team is coming off top showings at two recent meets in Walden and Kremmling.

In Walden, on April 20 the Steamboat team compete in a dual meet with the North Park squad,

Steamboat first-graders Eddie Brenner, Brian Moore and Jack Verploeg all had two wins each at the meet. Fellow first-graders Connor Garrecht-Connelly, Hondo Anderson and Connor Landusky also had wins at the dual.

In the third-grade division, Elliot Bender, Ian Noble, Justin Denton and Keith Curry won matches. Fourth-grader Teddy Heid and fifth-grader Travis Darling both won two matches. Sixth-grader Andy Morell also won.

On April 22, the Steamboat team traveled to Kremmling for the West Grand Tournament.

Kindergartner Jake Madsen was second at 41 pounds and classmate Gavin VanPelt was fourth at 50.

In the first-grade division, Garrecht-Connelly won the 44-pound class and Anderson took third at 49 pounds.

Sixty-one-pounder Brent Becker earned a second-place medal for the third-graders and Darling placed second in the 90-pound class for fifth-graders.

Steamboat's Andy Morell capped off the weekend by winning the 74-pound class in the sixth grade.
