— An 82-year-old fisherman from Nebraska spent two nights alone and lost in the Flat Tops Wilderness Area before being rescued on Monday.

Mort Saltmarsh, of Kimble, Neb., was separated from a guided fishing trip at Round Lake in the Devil's Causeway area on Saturday evening, according to Routt County Search and Rescue member Darrel Levingston.

Levingston said the six-person tour divided up around the small lake, and Saltmarsh left one side to walk to the other side. When the rest of the party convened at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, they realized Saltmarsh was missing and called for help with a cellular phone.

Crews from Routt and Rio Blanco counties, as well as a dog team from Routt County, assisted Garfield County officials in the search.

A National Guard helicopter spotted Saltmarsh shortly after 10 a.m. on Monday. Levingston said searchers went through an incredible amount of red tape to get permission to use the helicopter in the wilderness area.

Saltmarsh was found in good condition and was expected to head home after being fed and rehydrated.
