More than 140 youth soccer teams will arrive in Steamboat Springs this Friday for the start of the Steamboat Mountain Soccer Tournament.
The event is one of the most popular in the state, according to organizer Ty Lockhart and more than 50 teams had to be turned away again this year because of a lack of field space and referees.
"We have teams coming from all over the place," Lockhart said. "It's a pretty good cross section of the country."
Play will begin in several different age division on Friday morning. The tournament will continue all weekend and end on Sunday evening with the championship contests. Lockhart said their will be 12 teams from Steamboat entered in the brackets.
"This is a chance for our local teams to play quality soccer and not have to leave home," Lockhart said.
The tournament is an annual event in Steamboat Springs and raised more than $20,000 last year. The money goes to support local traveling teams in the form of entry fees, uniforms and other aid.
"It's a volunteer effort,' Lockhart said. "Parents of soccer players are the ones who make this happen."
