Boniface clings to narrow women's lead

Running series hits halfway point; top racers clustering

— Seven races into the summer season and the leaders of the Steamboat Springs running series are starting to emerge.

In the men's standings, Kevin Anderson has collected 46 points in four races to take a substantial lead over second-place runner Bill McCalla who has 38 points in five races. Paul Sachs is in third with 36 points.

The women's series is being led by Kelly Boniface, who has collected 47 points in four races. She is being chased closely by Kathy Miller is second with 46 points and Jane Reece in third with 45 points.

The Steamboat running series awards points based on runners' finishes within their age groups. The top five runners in each division are awarded points based on their finish in that group. This year, however, the points system has been changed. In addition to age-class points, bonus points are awarded based on overall finishes.

The series has 13 events during the summer. Runners must compete in a minimum of seven events to be included in the running point standings. Runners can compete in more than seven, but only the top finishes will be calculated in the finally tally.

At end of the summer series, the top man and women will be crowned series champions.

There are 43 runners entered in this year's running series. That includes 26 women and 17 men.

The Steamboat running series will continue this Sunday with the 22nd running of the Mountain Madness Half Marathon, 10K and fun run. The races will start at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning. For a related story, see Page 2C.
