Showdown winner
Becky Curry of Oak Creek won the local stage of the True Value Country Music Showdown Tuesday in Steamboat Springs. Nine competitors battled it out on a stage on the courthouse lawn. The event was sponsored by KBCR radio. Curry was backed up by Trevor Guire and Luke Keith of Led Stetson, the band that won the showdown in Steamboat Springs last year. She will now go on to a state-level competition.

Don't get me wrong. I'm no more a fan of urban sprawl than the next guy. I bought a house on the outskirts of Las Vegas eight years ago, only to find that three years ago I was surrounded by town. We moved further out to get away, but didn't see the handwriting on the wall or the bulldozers following us. Twenty thousand new housing starts a year gobbles up a lot of space, and before we knew it, we were surrounded again!

The Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association circulated a letter Monday asking member lodging properties to stop collecting a 1 percent resort fee, effective immediately, until the program can be revised to involve more sectors of the local resort economy. The letter raises questions about the future size of Steamboat's direct jet program during ski season. Last winter, the lodging community contributed $575,000 to the $2.25 million airline subsidy program.
