College students coming to town to ride

Make way for thousands of college students hitting the slopes this week, as bus-loads of snow-hungry teens and twentysomethings pour into Steamboat Springs. "There'll be a lot of kids, so we're bringing in extra rental equipment from our stores in Summit County," said Monty Holder, assistant manager at the SportStalker at Gondola Square.

The Coast Guard in Juneau, Alaska, suspended its search Sunday morning for a missing light plane in which former Routt County Sheriff Ed Burch was a passenger. The plane, piloted by another Juneau man, has been missing since Dec. 27, and there are signs it may have gone down in the ocean.

A 23-year-old Texas man faces a variety of criminal charges after allegedly driving off in a taxi full of passengers. Police say the joy ride ended when the taxi driver jumped in and put the vehicle in park.

Ski base gets crossing guard

Even as the tourist season reaches its peak in Steamboat Springs, things are slowing down dramatically at the top of Mount Werner Circle. The Steamboat Grand, in conjunction with a city traffic test of Mount Werner Circle, has placed a crossing guard at the south entrance to the hotel in order to allow for better pedestrian movement and safety.
