Top team escapes Sunday night thriller

Nite's Rest avoids late-game scare

Nite's Rest/Winona's remained unbeaten in the Sunday night senior hockey league but barely.

Nite's Rest opened up a 2-0 lead on Precision Pools and Spas in Sunday night's game behind goals from Bill Krueger and Paul Williams.

Precision would make a run at the league leaders in the closing period but couldn't net the goal needed to secure the win.

Precision's first goal came from Chuck Donely, who blasted a slapshot past Nite's Rest goalkeeper Thorman Idzahl to make the score 2-1 in the period of play. But the league-leading Nite's Rest regained its cushion before the end of the first period thanks to a goal from Rick Phillip.

Neither team scored in the second period, but things heated up again in the final frame of the game.

Donely netted his second goal of the night to cut the score to 3-2 at the start of the period. But Williams answered to make the score 4-2 halfway through the period.

But in the closing minutes, Precision's Gary Osteen came to life and netted two goals, one with just four second remaining in the game, to help secure the tie. It was the first tie of the season in any senior league game.

In other action, Alpine Oral and Facial Surgery gave second-place Backdoor Sports/The Skate Zone all it could handle in a close 4-3 contest.

At first it looked as if Backdoor Sports would skate away with the game. Goals by Jim Krats, Jim Leary and John Waldman gave that team a 3-0 lead. Krats added another goal to his team's total before the end of the first period. Alpine's John Seymour also netted a goal to make the score 4-1 after one period of play.

In the third, Alpine made a strong comeback, however, behind goals from Gunnar Ludwig and Lars Calistro. But the comeback fell just short as the team lost its fourth game of the season by a final 4-3 score.

Nite's Rest is currently on top of the league with seven points, Backdoor is in second with six points and Precision is in third with three points.
