Storm finds way to win in road trip

— The Steamboat Storm women's hockey team breezed past the Synergy at Arvada Saturday, coming away with a 3-0 win.

Goalie Angie Hess stopped 14 shots and Deb Rose scored a pair of goals to help lead the team to its third victory of the season.

The Storm, which improved to

3-2-2 on the year, scored its opening goal five minutes into the second period on an unassisted goal by Rose.

Diane Letson, who plays wing, netted the team's second goal with two minutes remaining on a pass from defenseman Lisa Owen.

Rose had the team's final goal during the third period on an assist from Lisa Wilkinson.

On Sunday, the Storm completed its two-day road trip as it fought to a 4-4 tie against Colorado College at Colorado Springs.

In that game, Marey Whelihan came up big with two goals.

Sara Katherman netted the first goal two minutes into the first period and Rose, who had the assist to Katherman, scored the team's second goal during the second period.

Marey Whelihan scored next during the second period, burying a pass from Letson past the Colorado College goalie. Letson also made the assist to Rose.

Whelihan had the final goal with one minute remaining in the second period on a double assist from Katherman and Patty Chovan.

Steamboat gave up a 4-2 lead as Colorado College battled back to score two unanswered goals during the third period to tie the game.

Chovan, who plays wing, said her team played aggressively against Colorado College.

"We played a good game on Sunday even though it ended in a tie," Chovan said. "We just kind of let our guard down there (near the end)."

The Storm plays a doubleheader this weekend at Howelsen Ice Arena against the Comets. The first game is at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, followed by Sunday's game that starts at noon.
