Busting out beloved pet earns a fine from court

— A 38-year-old Steamboat Springs man was fined and sentenced Wednesday to one year of probation for illegally entering the Steamboat Springs Animal Shelter to get his pet.

Curt W. Schultz was caught trying to retrieve his puppy from the shelter on Sept. 26. He pleaded guilty on Wednesday to second-degree criminal trespass.

Routt County Judge James Garrecht fined Schultz $238, placed him on one year of probation and ordered him to complete 60 hours of community service. If Schultz violates the probation, he could serve one year in jail.

"You used bad judgment," Garrecht said to Schultz. "I hope you use good judgment and comply with the court's sentence."

To get into the building, Schultz crawled through a side-door opening used for dogs.
