Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Chix with Stix hockey team recently placed second at a tournament at Boulder, where the team defeated the Left Hand Brewery Brewsers 4-1.
The Chix, who are now 2-2-2, scored three goals in the opening period and one in the final period to knock off the Brewsers.
Earlier in the tournament, the Steamboat women ended tied with the Denver Bandits after a scoreless contest. They fell to the CU Buffs 6-0 in the championship game.
Carol Vittore, who plays goalie, stopped 21 shots against the Bandits and 14 of 15 shots against the Brewsers.
Against the Brewsers, four Chix players had goals, including Jen Rose, Rene Dupree, Val Deitrich and Betsy Winchester. Rose and Dupree scored unassisted.
Winchester was credited with the assist to Deitrich and Kit Rice had the assist to Winchester, who knocked in the shot on a power play with one second remaining in the game.
The Chix next play host to the Bandits at 9 p.m. Saturday and again at 10 a.m. Sunday.
Lee Cox, who plays wing for the Chix, said her team played well at the tournament despite its shutout loss to the Buffs.
"The CU team is a very strong team and they basically schooled us and showed us what we were doing wrong," Cox said.
"The team is quite pleased with the results. Our game against the Bandits was pretty much a nail-biter. It was very exciting."
