Sailors show improvement at match

— Steamboat's wrestling team showed improvement Saturday as the team placed eighth out of 12 teams at the Steamboat Invitational.

Four Sailors placed in the top four, and Justin O'Leary and Levi Muhme were runners-up in their weight classes.

Muhme was defeated 14-4 by Hayden's Anton Fredrickson in the 135-pound championship, and O'Leary was pinned with two seconds left in the first period against Wes Torsell of Ralston Valley.

Adams tied for third place in the 171-pound class, and heavyweight Will Zimmerer also placed third in his class.

Zimmerer's finish was admirable considering the wrestler is only a sophomore.

Against Fredrickson, Muhme was called for an illegal move that involved locking the hands.

Fredrickson also was given two points for a reversal, though both wrestlers appeared out of bounds during the move.

Muhme had a takedown and escaped twice.

Sailors coach Chris Decker, whose team lost 40-38 to Eagle Valley during a triangular match Thursday, was encouraged by the effort put forth by his team, he said.

"The younger kids wrestled real well for being as young as they are," Decker said. "It was a good experience for them."

Senior Lee Gittleson, who went 3-2 at the tournament at 145 pounds, wrestled with a cast on his left hand. He suffered a broken thumb while recently snowmobiling. Gittleson expects to have the cast removed in about four weeks.

"I think we did really well," Gittleson said. "That's the best we've done since I've been here."

With a young squad that features 14 underclassmen on its 17-man roster, Decker said the future looked promising. Eleven of 13 Sailors who wrestled at Saturday's tournament won at least one match.

Steamboat next travels to Olathe High School for an invitational that begins at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The results of the Steamboat Invitational championship matches are as follows:
