Athletes recognized for classroom performance

— Four Steamboat Springs fall sports teams and 35 Sailors student-athletes recently received academic all-state honors.

The Sailors volleyball, tennis, soccer and girls cross-country teams all qualified as Colorado High School Activities Association academic team champions. Players on each of those teams received certificates.

To receive the honor, the teams had to have a combined grade point average of a 3.2 or better on an unweighted 4.0 scale.

Team grade point averages were based solely on last year's second semester scores.

Thirty-five Steamboat Springs students also qualified as Academic All-State, including 26 students who made the first team and nine who made honorable mention. Those who made all-state also received certificates.

Students who maintained cumulative grade point averages of 3.6 or higher as of last year's second semester qualified for the first team. Qualifying honorable-mention students maintained between a 3.3 and a 3.59 cumulative grade point average.

Steve Moos, high school athletics director, said the students' academic awards reflected their outstanding efforts in the classroom. The awards also reflected the support and guidance shown by their coaches, Moos said.

Kate Parke, athletics secretary, said the student-athletes were well-deserving recipients.

"To see some of these athletes through the years maintain that high GPA, and also participate in not only one sport but a sport each season, it's really gratifying to see them excel in a sport as well as academically," Parke said.

Sailors who made first-team Academic All-State included Derek Haverley, Blake Julian, Jamie McKelvie, Joseph Cutler, Walker Pruett, Lauren Dargevics, Jessica Fritz, Jessica Johnson, Maggie McElhinney, Ben Beall, Rodney Beall, John Hottenroth, Andrew Johnston, Zachary Klohr, Andrew Litzau, Ian Ramsay, J.J. Simon, Jennifer Castner, Emily Hines, Ryan Johnson, Amy Lewis, Nicole Murch, Jessica Philip, Jennifer Stanford, Rachel Starr and Bryan Weaver.

J.J. Simon, Jessica Fritz, Rodney Beall, John Hottenroth and Bryn Weaver maintained 4.0 cumulative grade point averages.

Students who made the honorable mention team included Mark Gillaspie, Daniel Martin, Carter Allen, Garrett McGinn, Patrick Sidinger, Rob Zehner, Nissa Carlson, Cody Firestone and Nathan Proper.
