The Steamboat Sailors soccer team got its 2000 season off on the right foot Thursday night, beating No. 1-ranked Kent Denver in the first round of the Alexander Dawson tournament in Boulder.
Junior Mike Rinn scored a hat trick, leading the Sailors to a 3-0 victory in their first game of the season, the first round of the Boulder tournament.
The game was also a big one for Sailor goalie Andrew Litzau, who recorded his first shut-out with five saves, head coach Rob Bohlmann said.
"We had a very solid performance from the entire group," Bohlmann said. "The played with a lot of rhythm and a lot of possession."
Rinn scored his first two goals in the first half. The third came roughly 12 minutes into the second half.
Kent Denver had been ranked as the state's No. 1 3A school in preseason polls, Bohlmann said.
Today, Steamboat takes on Monarch High School. The contest could be a tough one, as Monarch is the No. 1-seeded school in the Boulder tournament.
The Sailors will play once more on Saturday, but their opponent in that game has yet to be determined.
