Steamboat Springs Kick-off for the Steamboat Springs Sailors Friday season-opener may be at 7 p.m., but the festivities will start sooner, with a parent-organized tailgate party before the game against Middle Park.
Event coordinator Cindy Svendsen is one of several parents who will dish out food for hungry fans anticipating the Sailors home-opener against the Panthers. The tailgate party will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the high school, by the bleachers. The game starts at 7 p.m.
The first 150 people at the event will be provided with free pizza and drinks courtesy of Pisa's Pizza and Pasta. Other sponsors are B & K Distributing, City Market Food and Pharmacy and Wal-Mart.
Svendsen said the event would be the first of four tailgate parties this season. Friday's party is being organized by parents of players in the junior varsity program.
Pisa's will donate 15 large cheese pizzas to help support the Sailors, ranked the No. 10 3A school in the state.
Al Tyler, part-owner and manager of Pisa's, said that his pizza shop was eager to support the football program.
"We always try to cater to the community and be helpful in any way we can," Tyler said.
Steamboat, 7-3 last year, is one of the top teams in the 3A Western Slope Conference, and has its sights on a state playoff berth.
Allie Barr, who's helping to organize the tailgate, said the event is a great opportunity for fans to prepare for an exciting football season.
"It's a great time to get pumped up for the game," Barr said. "It's going to be a real quick, fast, simple get together just to kick off the game."
