Firefighters respond to 89th wildland fire

Chuck Vale chalked up on Thursday the 89th wildland fire that a Routt County fire district has had to put out this year.

At 2 p.m. Thursday, West Routt Fire District volunteers responded to a small lightning-sparked blaze on private land at the the southwest corner of the county, said Vale, Routt County's emergency manager.

Firefighters had the blaze controlled by 5:30 p.m.

It was the sixth small fire that local fire crews have dealt with since Tuesday and, at No. 89, more than double the 44 fires that local crews put out in 1999.

"We're still getting a few strikes every day," Vale said.

Though fire crews are busy, Vale said he is optimistic because rain is now coming with the lightning.
