Steamboat Springs This week's damp spring weather has put a temporary hold on a showdown between the Steamboat Springs and Soroco high school baseball teams.
The squads were scheduled to meet Tuesday afternoon in Steamboat, but the game was canceled because of wet field conditions.
The sun managed to peek through the clouds Tuesday morning, but it wasn't clear long enough to dry out the field for play. The Steamboat Springs High School baseball team will have to wait another day to face the Soroco Rams. The Rams have posted an impressive 5-1 mark in the 2A division this season and earned a share of first place in the conference.
The two Routt County teams are expected, if weather conditions permit, to square off at 4 p.m. today on Simillion Field. A junior varsity game is scheduled to follow at 5:30 p.m.
This is the first of three games on the Sailors' calendar this week. Steamboat will travel to Carbondale for a meeting with Basalt on Thursday before hosting Glenwood Springs in a huge conference meeting on Saturday.
That game is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Saturday and will also be held at Simillion Field. It will be the final regular-season game for the Sailors. The following week, the Western Slope teams will square off in the district playoffs.
Soroco will also be gearing up for a playoff run. The Rams are currently tied for the 2A conference lead with Grand Valley and the Oak Creek team is 10-5 this season overall.
Today's game will be the final tune-up for the Rams. Soroco opens district playoffs against Dolores at 1 p.m. Friday. That game will be played in Dolores since the Rams do not have a home field.
Last Saturday, Soroco split a doubleheader with Grand Valley, losing the first game 17-5 and winning the second 9-7.
The Sailors lost a 13-7 game against Delta in Glenwood Springs last Friday. Rifle and Moffat County are currently battling for the top spot in the Western Slope Conference's 4A division with 4-2 records. Steamboat is hoping for a win over Glenwood this week and a chance to move out of last place in the conference.
