Sidewalk work may begin this week

— Construction of curb, gutter and sidewalk improvements on a short section of Third Street in downtown Steamboat Springs could begin this week.

Public Works Director Jim Weber said Wednesday the construction won't result in any road closures on the section of Third Street between Lincoln Avenue and Oak Street. While it may narrow the traffic lane, there will be more than enough room for traffic to pass, Weber added.

The new sidewalk will be built immediately adjacent to the Norwest Bank parking lot and immediately across the street from the side entrance to the downtown post office. Weber expects the new curb to clear up the current confusing situation with conflicting automobile and pedestrian movements in that block. The confusion results from motorists pulling in and out of the bank parking lot at various points up and down the street, Weber said. When the project is complete, the only Third Street access to the lot will be at the point a city alley cuts across its southern end. No longer will motorists be able to turn right at the stop sign on Oak Street, and continue swinging directly into the parking lot on their way to check their mail.

Weber has predicted the new curb and sidewalk will not only enhance pedestrian safety, but lead to fuller utilization of the post office parking lot.
