More than 300 young wrestlers visited Steamboat Springs April 15 looking for titles in the Mountain Invitational wrestling tournament.

When it was all over, eight of the wrestlers who were crowned call Steamboat Springs home. Another 32 local wrestlers placed at the event and organizer Richard Atkinson said the tournament was a huge success.

Steamboat's Luke Anderson earned a title in the first grade's 40-pound class. He was joined by fellow first-grade champion Connor Garrett Connelly who topped teammate Sean Geisler in the 44-pound class. Steamboat also earned a title at 48 pounds where local Hondo Anderson was crowned champion.

Three Steamboat wrestlers earned titles in the third-grade division. Elliot Bender (59 pounds), Beau Becker (61 pounds) and Keith Curry (91 pounds) all collected championships at this year's home tourney.

The final crowns came in the fifth-grade division where Siara Atkinson topped the 55-pound class. In the combined fifth- and sixth-grade division, Steamboat's Travis Darling won the 90-pound class.

This year's mountain invitational drew wrestlers from Eagle, Parachute, Rifle, New Castle, Meeker, Rangely, Moffat County, Hayden, North Park, West Grand, and Soroco.

"It's fun to watch these young wrestlers and it is amazing the level of competition in the finals," Atkinson said.

Steamboat earned seven second-place medals, seven third-place finishes and eight fourth-place showings.

Local wrestlers placing second were Geisler, Keenan Starbuck, MacKenzie Bloom, David Jones, Darby McNamara, Treat Romick and Lane Shipley.

The meet was the last this year for in the Western Slope Peewee Wrestling Association. The local team, however, has a dual meet scheduled with North Park and will travel to Kremmling for the West Grand Tournament this weekend. The final meet of the season will come on May 6 in Oak Creek at the Soroco Invitational.
