Steamboat Springs Longtime Steamboat Springs sporting goods retailer Rod Schrage has plans to build a new Ski Haus store.
"I've had a dream to have a pure sports store and have it appear like a sports store," Schrage said.
His plan is to build a 10,500-square-foot store immediately across Pine Grove Road from the existing Ski Haus location. Pending successful completion of the city planning process, Schrage would like to begin construction in late summer.
"I'm ready to roll with it," Schrage said. "I'm here for the long haul."
Schrage currently operates a sporting goods store, gas station/convenience store and liquor store, all out of one building at the northeast corner of Pine Gove Road and U.S. 40. If his plans work out, Schrage said he'd like to expand all three businesses.
The new building, as proposed, would be built at the southeast corner of U.S. 40 and Pine Grove, roughly in front of the Pine Grove Business Center. It would include 4,750 square feet of ski rental storage on a garden level, with 4,750 square feet of retail space on the main level. There would also be 1,000 square feet of office space on a mezzanine level.
Tentative elevation drawings by architect Eric Smith reflect a building in the shape of a square cross, with roof gables at all four points and a cupola in the center of the cross.
Schrage said he is tempering his excitement over the project with the knowledge that he has much work to do before he secures city approvals and building permits for the project. He has owned the site for the new building since 1984.
The new Ski Haus building is in the earliest stages of the city planning process; Smith has field documents at City Hall, but no planner has been assigned to the project and no public hearings have been scheduled.
"We've grown to the point that it's a reality," Schrage said. "It's going to be a major step for Ski Haus."
