2 men rescued from Fish Creek

— It wasn't the most difficult operation Routt County Search and Rescue personnel have ever been on, but two new residents of Steamboat Springs probably couldn't care less.

Gavin Cole and Ryan VanMaren, both 22, were rescued from a spot east of Fish Creek Falls early yesterday after getting trapped on the opposite side from the trail. They were brought out at approximately 6:30 a.m.

John Witte of Search and Rescue said he was called at about 2 a.m. Wednesday. A friend of Cole and VanMaren called the dispatch center when the two men didn't return home on time.

Witte met with two other rescuers, Jim Vail and Missy Stevens at the Fish Creek parking lot at approximately 3:30 a.m.

While Witte coordinated the operstion from the parking lot, vail, his search dog and Stevens headed up Fish Creek Trail.

They found the two men, who were wearing only light clothing, and guided them out. Witte said the clothing the men had on was adequate for the warm Wednesday afternoon, but was not appropriate once the sun went down.
