— Two Steamboat Springs residents were charged with assaulting a police officer during the weekend, and one Steamboat Springs Police Department officer got the brunt of both reported assaults.

Maxwell Arthur Bomberg, 20, was arrested Saturday and charged with nine counts, including driving under the influence of drugs, minor in possession of alcohol, possession of drugs, resisting arrest and second-degree assault on a police officer.

Officers Tom Munden and John McCartin were putting the handcuffed Bomberg into the police cruiser when he reportedly knocked Munden to the ground and began running, Sgt. Rich Brown said. McCartin reportedly was talking to the passenger in the car when this happened, near Dream Island Plaza and U.S. Highway 40, and Bomberg ran until he was caught near the pedestrian underpass of 13th Street near the Yampa River, where Munden caught up with him. Bomberg was released Monday on a personal recognizance bond, and no working phone number for him could be found.

Brown said Munden's knee was strained when he was knocked down.

On Sunday, Munden and Sgt. Gerard Geis were arresting Shara Marie Chabot after they had her perform roadside tests and determined that she was driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.

Capt. Joel Rae said Chabot was handcuffed and placed in the front seat of Geis' SUV, but she got out of the front seat and ran back to her car.

"Officer Munden and Sgt. Geis go to grab her as she appears to be trying to drive her car away, at which time she becomes combative, flailing around kicking her legs at the officers, at which time she kicks officer Munden in the knee," Rae said.

She hit the same knee Munden had injured Saturday. Rae said he did not think Chabot was injured during the scuffle.

She was charged with second-degree assault on a police officer and resisting arrest and was booked into the Routt County Jail by Geis. Chabot remained in jail Tuesday afternoon.

Brown said Munden has not missed any work because of the injuries but that he will have to have the knee examined.
