January 7, 2014
An avalanche in Eagle County late Tuesday morning has killed one person and injured three others.
The avalanche struck about 11:35 a.m. in East Vail Chutes, said Jessie Mosher, an Eagle County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.
Rescuers and emergency workers have responded to the area, between Vail Pass and Vail Mountain.
“At this point we have confirmed four people involved,” Mosher said.
The three survivors do not have life-threatening injuries, Mosher said.
The Colorado Avalanche Information Center reported the incident shortly after 1 p.m. describing it as “large” and happening at or near timberline.
The CAIC rated the area at “considerable risk” for an avalanche, describing “dangerous avalanche conditions.”
The CAIC avalanche forecast for the Steamboat and Flat Tops zone rated the risk as moderate for Tuesday with danger of wind slabs and persistent slabs.
