Finding the right “look” is a knack that comes effortlessly to this year’s Best Hairstylist Kaitlyn Reed.

“The gratification of watching someone’s face light up from getting the cut and color they’ve always wanted while keeping the integrity of their hair is a great feeling,” says Reed, a Wisconsin native who has lived in Steamboat Springs for seven years.

When clients take a seat at Reed’s station at Comb Goddess, they might notice some bike grease and a few bumps and bruises. As an avid downhill mountain biker, Reed says it’s a great conversation starter.

The ability to listen and be honest with clients are just a few qualities it takes to be a good stylist, she says.

“It’s all about knowing your client’s lifestyle and picking a color and cut that will work for that,” says Reed. “You have to be on the same page. If we’re not, it’s my job to communicate effectively with them. If I’m honest with them, they’ll be more likely to open up to me.”

Originally, Reed studied nursing but then she decided it was time to enroll in beauty school, following a passion she’s had since childhood.

Since graduating in 2011 from the Salon Professional Academy in Appleton, Wisconsin, Reed says life as a hairstylist is a continuous learning process.

From balayage to ombre, bridal and fine hair to the natural wavy look, Reed knows how to implement the latest trends on Steamboat locals.

“I love meeting new people and making them feel like a superstar when they leave the salon,” says Reed.
