Steamboat Springs — Steamboat Ski Area had received more than a foot of snow at midmountain in the 24 hours preceding Thursday afternoon, and driveways and sidewalks across Steamboat also had a nice coating of light powder.
A measuring station near downtown was reporting 4.9 inches of new snow Thursday morning. A station between downtown and the mountain was reporting 7 inches.
Steamboat-based meteorologist Mike Weissbluth reported Thursday morning that the overnight storm was a bigger snow producer here than he first expected because it passed directly over Steamboat, thus maximizing accumulations.
The average December snowfall at midmountain at the ski area is 66.2 inches. The 82.5 inches that accumulated through Thursday morning ranks ninth on the list of big Decembers since winter 1979-80.
The highest December snowfall recorded at midmountain since 1979 is the 165.5 that fell in 1983. That was the early winter of 40 days and 40 nights of snow.
Other notable December snowfalls included 133.5 in 1989 and 126 in 2007.
The season snowfall total at midmountain stood at 116.75 inches Thursday morning.
Weather observer Art Judson reported at 8:30 a.m. Thursday that up-to-the-minute snowfall at his measuring station between downtown and the mountain totaled 5 feet of snow for December.
Weissbluth continues to call for 1 to 3 inches Thursday and again Thursday night before the snow begins to taper off during the day Friday.
Clark saw less snow, with a station up Routt County Road 129 north of Steamboat reporting 3 inches.
Two stations near Oak Creek reported 3.1 to 3.5 inches of new snow Thursday morning.
