— The Fourth of July celebration in Yampa will go on all weekend as the town hosts a community picnic, a car show, fireworks and the traditional parade through town.

Starting Saturday, the town will have historical tours of Yampa, based at the Yampa-Egeria Historical Society on Main Street. Organizer and local historian Rita Herold said the tours, held at 1 and 2:30 p.m., will be in a van this year instead of on foot to allow more people to participate.

On Saturday evening, the town will host a My Hometown Community Picnic from 5 to 7 p.m. at Yackey Park. The family-centered event will cost $10 for families, $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and younger. A classic car show will be held across the street from the park at the same time.

On Sunday, the day will start with a pancake breakfast from 7 to 10:30 a.m. at the Ladies Aid Hall.

The parade down Moffat Avenue will line up at noon and start moving at 1 p.m. Organizers emphasized that anyone not in line by noon would not be judged.

Trophies, donated by First National Bank of the Rockies, will go to the winners. Second- and third-place floats will be awarded ribbons. Categories are: float, mini-float, decorated bike, decorated horse and rider, adult costume, antique vehicle, horse-drawn carriage, child costume (for 6 years old and younger as well as 7 years and older), best miscellaneous and best group.

After the parade, a barbecue beef lunch will be held at South Routt Elementary School. Town members also are invited to set up booths to sell food or goods. There will be no commercial food vendors at the site.

In the evening, the town will host the traditional horse polo on Moffat Avenue. The games begin after 4 p.m., and the horse race will follow.

The Fourth of July fireworks come at dark. The display cost $2,080, and the town donated $1,000. Proceeds from the lunch will go to help defray the costs.
