Y.E.S. Golf Tournament offers early registration break, chance to help local students

Steamboat Springs — The snow is melting quickly in the Yampa Valley, and the time for golfers to start thinking about midsummer golf tournaments has arrived.
Among the first of several tournaments this summer to take center stage will be the Y.E.S. (Youth Educational Scholarship) Golf Tournament, which will take place June 4 at the Rollingstone Ranch Golf Club.
"As an annual rite of spring, the Y.E.S. Golf Tournament is the perfect way to kick off the golfing season while supporting the aspirations of local students,” tournament director Stacy Huffman said in a news release. "For 26 years, this scholarship fund has supported many Routt County students, and we greatly appreciate the longstanding support from the Steamboat community."
The Y.E.S. Golf Tournament still is a few months away, but organizers are hoping to encourage supporters to register early by offering reduced entry fees for the event. Golfers will have until Friday to take advantage of $115 entry fee. Then the cost goes up to $125 until May 23, after which the cost will be $135 per golfer.
The format is a mixed scramble with four-player teams, or five-player teams if a team has at least one female player. There is no handicap required, but teams cannot have more than two players with handicaps of 12 or less.
The top three teams will win prizes, and individuals can earn awards in a number of categories, including honors for the longest putt, longest drive and drives closest to the center line, to name a few.

There will be two hole-in-one prizes, including a car donated by Steamboat Motors and a $15,000 cash prized donated by Yampa Valley Bank.
"One of the great things about this tournament is that it raises money for scholarships, which are awarded to students in Routt County," Huffman said.
The Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association and the Young Professionals Network organize the annual tournament. The event has given away $184,000 since it began.
Students who want to be considered for scholarships have until Wednesday to summit applications for 2014 scholarships. All forms, including scholarship information and application forms, tournament player forms and tournament sponsor forms can be downloaded at http://www.steamboatchamber.com/yes.
