After a few days of sunshine and warm temperatures, weather forecasters are predicting a blast of winter-like weather will return to Steamboat Springs on Tuesday.

“A strong spring storm in moist and unseasonably cold northwest flow will impact our area by Tuesday afternoon,” local weather forecaster Mike Weissbluth wrote Sunday. “Temperatures will be falling throughout the day and showers should begin by midday, turning to snow at the valley bottom between sunset and midnight.”

With a high temperature of 69 degrees in the forecast, Monday is expected to be the warmest day of the week.

But outdoor recreation could be hampered on that day by thunderstorms.

The National Weather Service in Grand Junction has issued a hazardous weather outlook for the Yampa Valley that calls for thunderstorms to develop throughout the week.

Weissbluth predicted the upcoming storms could leave behind some significant accumulations of rain and snow.

“This looks like another significant snowstorm in our very active spring with 6 to 12 inches or more on the hill by May Day, with maybe half that down in the valley,” he wrote. “ A reinforcing surge of cold air on the backside of the storm crosses the area Wednesday afternoon, continuing the showers through the day.”

April has been a particularly snowy month for Steamboat and the storms have bolstered area snowpack.
