Winter Carnival 2013: Welcome to the 100th Winter Carnival
February 3, 2013
In a snowy winter 100 years ago, a group of energetic visionaries created a celebration of winter that continues today. Carl Howelsen and his team of organizers later were known as the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, which today has evolved into one of the leading training grounds for skiing and snowboarding and has produced more Winter Olympians than any other club in North America. We are honoring our Ski Town USA heritage this carnival by inviting all of our Steamboat Olympians to serve as this year's grand marshals.
In the early days of Winter Carnival, Routt County ranchers would come into town with their horses and pull kids down Lincoln Avenue on skis before heading to the ski jumps to watch greats like Carl Howelsen and Gordon Wren fly through the air. Today, ranchers — some of whom used to be those kids on skis racing down Lincoln Avenue — keep the tradition alive. And if you head over to the jumps, there's a good chance you're going to see current and future Olympians flying through the air.
Winter Carnival has something for everyone: street events, skiing activities, the famous Diamond Hitch Parade with Steamboat Springs High School's legendary Ski Band, and Saturday's Night Extravaganza. This year's night show will be spectacular and will showcase the Lighted Man, torchlight skiers, fiery hoop jumpers, the Roman candle dance and Winter Carnival's biggest fireworks display on record.
The Winter Sports Club still produces the Winter Carnival, and we couldn't do it without a dedicated staff and hundreds of volunteers. In addition, I'd like to recognize our many sponsors, including the city of Steamboat Springs, Steamboat Ski Area and the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association staff, all of which partner to make this event a success.
No matter what your favorite part of Winter Carnival might be, I invite you to join in the celebration of our great community. Get out and immerse yourself in winter and see what all the fun is about. I hope to see you at many of the events this upcoming week.
