Ringing in its two-year anniversary of offering free displays of a variety of visual and performing art at venues in downtown Steamboat Springs, the First Friday Artwalk includes shows at 24 galleries, restaurants, retailers and other outlets this month. Routt County filmmakers Cynthia Rutledge and Smokey Vandergrift made this documentary about the son of Carl Howelsen. This film gives Leif Howelsen’s story about his time in a concentration camp during World War II, his time as a prison guard after liberation and his struggle to find and apologize to a former German guard decades after the war. It’s hard to “genre-ize” the six-person band MTHDS, guitarist and vocalist Johnny Schleper said in a March interview with the Steamboat Pilot & Today. Think live hip-hop because everyone in the band is a fan, but add in classic-rock-style guitar solos because Schleper likes to play them. More than 50 local and regional artisan vendors will showcase and sell their products at the annual Holidays in the Rockies artisan market. The holiday shopping event, a fundraiser for and event by the Steamboat Springs Arts Council, features a live performances by the Jewels at 11 a.m. and Yampa Valley Boys at 1 p.m. Rachel’s BBQ will have lunches available for purchase, and $1 buys a ticket in a wreath raffle for holiday decorations. Bayou bluesman Tab Benoit takes each step as it comes in his live set. “There’s no plan. I pretty much play requests, and I play whatever feels good. I don’t have a set way of doing anything, and I don’t walk in with any preplanned show. It’s all of us together,” Benoit said in a summer 2009 interview with the Steamboat Pilot & Today.
