— Steamboat's Village Inn restaurant is closing its doors.

"That is a fact — our last day of operation is Wednesday of this week," general manager Shauna Bokn said Monday. "It's a permanent close."

Bokn said the Village Inn has been in Steamboat Springs for about 14 years, initially attached to the Holiday Inn before moving to its Central Park Drive location about four years ago.

Bokn said the economic recession has proved too challenging for the restaurant, which specializes in breakfast and pies and also serves lunch and dinner.

"We're just not making any money. We're not surviving very well up in Steamboat," she said. "The economy hit Colorado late, and it hit Steamboat even later. … We are costing the company more money than we're bringing in right now."

Bokn said the Steamboat Village Inn employs about 17 people, about 80 percent of whom are full-time workers. Bokn has worked at the restaurant for about two years.

Family Restaurants Inc. owns 11 Village Inn locations in Colorado, Bokn said, including Steamboat's and locations in Craig and Silverthorne. The Denver-based franchise also owns some Qdoba restaurants — including one just down the sidewalk from Steamboat's Village Inn — and some restaurants in Alaska, Bokn said.

District manager Lacy Packard said Family Restaurants had no comment Monday about its other locations or the closure of Steamboat's Village Inn. She said the franchise might place a notice with more information in the Steamboat Today soon.

On Monday afternoon, Craig residents Don and Diana Guthrie walked out of the restaurant after a late lunch. They said they would miss Steamboat's Village Inn.

"We stop here quite a bit," Don Guthrie said.

"It's always clean, people are nice and the food is always fresh," Diana Guthrie added.

Bokn said the Steamboat restaurant has not planned any closing specials.
