Steamboat Springs — Considering that the day will start with the official opening of Steamboat Ski Area and finish with a prime time Broncos NFL game, it might seem like Steamboat Springs sports fans will have a full plate on Thanksgiving Day.
Steamboat Springs Running Series Director Lisa Barbour has long thought there was one thing missing, however, and Thursday she's intent on providing it.
"It seems like every town in America has a turkey trot," she said. "I just thought it would be a lot of fun if we had one, too."
Steamboat's inaugural Thanksgiving Day race will start at 9 a.m. Thursday at Steamboat Springs High School. The all-asphalt course will lead participants 4.6 miles along paved roads, out away from the school on Amethyst Drive, turning around at Routt County Road 38, the Buffalo Pass road, and then returning on the same roads to the high school.
"I've been thinking about it for a while but finally decided to spring into action a couple of weeks ago," Barbour said.
Organizers are asking for participants to either donate $5 or bring a nonperishable food item. All of the money raised at the event will benefit LIFT-UP of Routt County.
The forecast calls for a clear, sunny 43 degrees, though Barbour said the race would go on no matter the weather.
