Tom Ross: Whatever happened to Pink?
November 22, 2011
Steamboat Springs — Pink dominated the American Music Awards on Sunday night, and as far as I could tell, the multi-million selling recording artist, Pink, wasn't even in the auditorium.
Katy Perry, who showed off a very modern pink hairdo and accompanied herself on a jumbo pink acoustic guitar, won a special achievement award for being the first female pop artist with five No. 1 hit singles off one album — "Teenage Dream."
But the party girl herself couldn't hold a candle to Nicki Minaj, who rocked an even bigger pink hairdo and made a bigger entrance by strutting down a silver staircase in a silver space suit. Her costume featured what appeared to me to be a pair of chrome 1952 Ford taillights on her rear end and twin tachometers on her chest.
I had to go to Nicki's Web page to learn that those actually were functioning stereo speakers on her derriere. If that last sentence does not cause a play on words to leap to mind, you're on your own. Because I'm not going there.
It might sound like I'm ripping on Nicki, but the truth is I found her to be an exceptionally creative artist with tons of personality. And while watching an awards show that features a good amount of rap and hip-hop music, it was refreshing to see female performers, instead of angry young men, taking home almost all of the statuettes.
Minaj won for favorite rap/hip-hop artist.
The truth is, I was channel flipping Sunday night. When I grew weary of watching the New York Giants launch eight punts in eight possessions on Football Night in America, I hurried over to the AMA's just for the spectacle of it.
I should point out that the ubiquitous pop/country singer, Taylor Swift, who wore pink lipstick but stuck with the blond hairdo, was named favorite performer of the year. She is not generally known for being down with the hippity-hoppers, so it was impressive to observe that Ms. Swift knew all the lyrics when Minaj performed "Turn Me On," and transitioned into "Super Bass."
Another female performer who took home more than one AMA was Adele, who was forced to stay home from the ceremony after undergoing surgery on her larynx. Adele won for favorite female pop/rock artist, favorite pop/rock album and favorite adult contemporary artist. She presumably will be "in the pink" as soon as she recovers from surgery.
Which brings us to the original Pink, who burst onto the pop music scene in 2001. It was just last year that Pink set a new high for music award shows by singing and spinning from a trapeze during the MTV Music Awards.
I know we're all living in a youth culture, but can it be that time already has caught up to Pink?
It turns out that when Pink performed at the AMA's in 2010, she was wearing a maternity outfit.
So for now, the daring singer is staying home raising a pink bundle of joy.
