Steamboat Springs — Looking for a way to introduce more people to its sport, the Tennis Center at Steamboat Springs is hosting a block party Sunday complete with tennis drills, matches and a barbecue lunch. The event is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event also will include information about local tennis programs, leagues, tournaments and lessons. Current members of the Tennis Center as well as local pros will be on hand, as well. Prince Tennis Racquets will provide free demos.
All ages and ability levels are welcome. Individuals don't have to belong to the Steamboat Tennis Association or Tennis Center to attend.
"It's an all-in-one day," said Bill Krueger, president of the Steamboat Tennis Association.
The STA did a similar event last year and found it to be a successful way of introducing tennis and related programs to the community.
Krueger said the event coincides with the United States Tennis Association's celebration of tennis during the month of May.
Tennis is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States, and Krueger said the event serves as a way to introduce the game to people who haven't ever played or haven't played in a long time.
Local tennis officials hope to emphasize the youth programs supported by the STA. In addition to helping fund the high school teams, the STA provides scholarships for children to play tennis.
"We want to get them involved and know about the kids programs and how successful they are," Krueger said. "It's another avenue to show the community what's going on in tennis."
