Storm to hit Steamboat today and Saturday; avalanche danger increasing
Weather warning in place for Mount Werner
December 10, 2010
Steamboat Springs — Mount Werner and parts of Steamboat Ski Area are under a winter storm warning from noon today until 3 p.m. Saturday for a storm system expected to hit the higher elevations hardest while also dropping between 4 and 8 inches of snow in town.
National Weather Service meteorologist Paul Frisbie said the storm is expected to shroud the upper reaches of Mount Werner in clouds through Saturday. The weather service upped the total possible accumulation for the mountain to 10 to 15 inches. Strong winds are expected to accompany the storm, he said.
The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory this morning for the city of Steamboat Springs. A total of 4 to 8 inches could fall in city limits, with the heaviest snow falling this evening.
Today's high temperature in Steamboat is forecast at 36 degrees, with an overnight low of 21. Saturday's high is expected to hover around the freezing mark, with an overnight low Saturday of 13 degrees.
The Colorado Avalanche Information Center has issued an avalanche watch for areas of Northwest Colorado including the Park, Elk Head, Gore, Flat Tops and Rabbit Ears Pass mountain ranges and areas.
The avalanche watch states: “An avalanche watch means that dangerous avalanche conditions are possible in the near future. If forecast snow materializes, large natural and human-triggered avalanches will be likely Saturday in the watch area. Backcountry travelers should monitor weather and avalanche forecasts. Carry avalanche rescue equipment and avoid steep slopes.”
The Colorado Avalanche Information Center’s Steamboat zone page provides additional information for backcountry users.
