Stepping out in Routt: Series will promote walking

LiveWell Northwest Colorado and the Steamboat Pilot & Today team up to encourage exercise

Janet Hruby

— Summer is finally here. (Really!) Town is starting to come alive with cyclists, paddlers and hikers. More and more people are heading outdoors. What about you? What will it take this year to get you outside and moving?

A goal? Decide to walk 3 miles by the end of the summer. Raise the stakes by signing up to walk or run in the Steamboat Springs Running Series.

Support? Recruit a friend, co-worker or your family to exercise with you. It's easier to keep a routine when someone else is expecting you to participate.

Sobering statistics? Colorado is the leanest state in the nation, and 55 percent of the adults in Colorado are overweight or obese. However, our children have moved from third to 23rd leanest in the nation. About 29 percent of Colorado children 2 to 14 years old and 20 percent of high-school-aged children are overweight and obese. Between 13 and 33 percent of the students in our Routt County schools are overweight and obese, and that has increased each year. Almost 50 percent of Routt County's middle and high school students say they don't get any more than 10 minutes of physical activity outside of physical education classes during the school year.

More time? Sure, it's easy to say you don't have time, but if it's a priority, you can adjust to fit tin just 150 minutes a week of exercise for adults and 60 minutes a day for children, the recommended minimum for health.

Suggestions? That's where this new series comes in. LiveWell Northwest Colorado and the Steamboat Pilot & Today have teamed up to publish a weekly walking guide to get more people "Stepping Out in Routt." LiveWell Northwest Colorado's mission is to reduce obesity in Routt County by introducing healthy eating and active living choices and empowering residents to select them. The goal of this partnership is to provide you with weekly tips about a variety of walking trails across Routt County that you can enjoy with your family while getting the recommended amount of daily exercise your body needs to maintain health.
