Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs American Legion baseball team swept a doubleheader during the weekend, knocking off a nemesis for the first time.
Steamboat beat Rangely, 20-3 and 13-8, on Saturday. The second game marked the first time the team has beaten Rangely pitcher Kody Denny.
"The wins permitted us to move ahead of Rangely in the league standings," Steamboat manager Dave Roy said. "We're in third place with three doubleheaders in the next couple weeks. We have an opportunity to finish on top of the league."
In the first game, Steamboat pounded out 10 hits and got another sterling performance from Tyler Brown on the mound. In the five-inning shortened game, Brown went the distance, giving up three hits and striking out 11.
Steamboat got two runs in the first inning on a two-run home run by Ryan Jeep before blowing the game open with six runs in the second and eight in the third.
Jeep had two hits and three RBIs, and Thomas Kelly had two hits and two RBIs.
"It was a good combination of pitching and hitting," Roy said. "We got timely hits all day. It was nice to win that first one."
In the second game, with Denny on the hill for Rangely, Steamboat battled back and forth.
Steamboat got a pair of runs in the top of the second before surging ahead in the top of the third. There, Steamboat battered Denny around for six hits, a pair of walks and seven runs.
Steamboat's Matt Regan pitched a complete game, striking out 10. Cutter Pasternak had three hits, and Jeep chipped in a pair of hits and three RBIs.
Steamboat, 11-4, now prepares to welcome Paonia at 5 p.m. Friday for a doubleheader at Adams Field at Howelsen Hill.
It marks the only home game Steamboat has had during the Legion or high school season.
"We'd like to see some people come out and see us play," Roy said.
