Steamboat’s Cardboard Classic features creativity, crashes

Annual cardboard derby part of season-ending events

The "El Camino Loco" cardboard craft crashes into a barrier at the end of the run at Saturday's 30th annual Cardboard Classic event at the Steamboat Ski Area. The craft won an award for being the most creative.

Closing Day events at Steamboat Ski Area

■ 1 p.m.: Third annual Splashdown Pond Skim: Competitors sport costumes and try to cross an icy pond on skis or a snowboard. Check-in for registered skimmers is from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Registration is closed. The event is free to watch.

■ 2:30 p.m.: Lifts close; 4 Points Hut and Rendezvous Saddle close

■ 3 p.m.: Thunderhead facility closes. Donavon Frankenreiter free concert: The pop-conscious singer-songwriter shares his honest-minded and soul-steeped original songs in a free concert.
