Steamboat’s Amy Charity wins in Laramie
June 30, 2011
Steamboat Springs — Going into a brutal race she'd never done, in the tough road bike setting of Laramie, Wyo., Amy Charity was excited about one thing.
As a Category 3 rider, she would get to race alongside the pro and elite riders for the first time at the 23rd annual Dead Dog Classic Stage Race.
It turns out that Charity can't just race against the best, she can beat most of them. Charity lapped the Category 3 field and finished third overall during the two-day race.
"It's hard to know where you're going to place," she said. "I definitely didn't know how I would fare against the entire field."
The event featured a 53-mile road race Saturday and a criterium and time trial Sunday. Charity won the road race and criterium and was second in the time trial.
The road race began at 8,400 feet in Albany, Wyo., and reached 10,800 feet at Snowy Range Pass. At one point there is a 9-mile climb that covers 2,400 vertical feet.
"It was the hardest part," Charity said about the road race. "It can define the race. You can make up lots of time on that. Much more than a criterium or time trial. I lucked out with that. I was able to get out with a break group ahead of the rest of the pack. It was helpful for the overall race."
Charity said the criterium posed some interesting problems with six turns in it. The criterium started at 11 a.m. Sunday, and the time trial began at 2 p.m., leaving little room for rest. But by the time Charity reached the time trial, she already had an eight-minute lead.
Charity said she plans to do a couple more races in preparation for the Steamboat Springs Stage Race from Sept. 2 to 5.
Charity hopes to accumulate enough points to move up a category in time for the Steamboat Stage Race in order to race the pro women.
Steamboat rider Rick Schuette was 13th in the men's 45 and older category.
