— Getting revved up for the winter means a lot of things, and November usually symbolizes the time of year when locals head out to the garage or storage area and make a quick assessment of their gear.

New skis, old boots, new boots, old skis.

It happens every winter. But what to do with those boots that have been hanging around a little too long?

The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club has a plan. The Winter Sports Club is introducing the Boots in the Boat event.

The club is asking residents to fill up the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association’s Ambassadors gondola car with any kind of ski, snowboard or Telemark boot. The car will be at Howelsen Hill the next two days where people can drop off boots. It will then be sealed and at various locations starting at 7 p.m. Friday at the annual Ski Swap at Steamboat Springs Middle School. Then, at 2 p.m. Nov. 27 in Gondola Square, the car will be opened and the person who gets the closest to guessing how many boots are in the car wins a grand prize. There will be prizes for the second- and third-place finishers, too.

The Winter Sports Club is asking people to donate $5 for one guess or $25 for six guesses. People can donate at the car, which will be at various locations throughout town.

The money will go to the Winter Sports Club and help with the general operations and day-to-day expenses of the club.

“We wanted to come up with an idea around Scholarship Day,” said Maren Berge, a Winter Sports Club Alumni Committee member. “We wanted to increase the excitement around the weekend and the beginning of the season.”

Steamboat TV18 will donate $10 worth of video production to the Winter Sports Club for every boot donated.

“We hope through video we can help the Winter Sports Club drive their fundraising and future donations,” said Mike Polucci, Steamboat TV18’s general manager.

The top three prizes are a day of skiing for two with Steamboat Powdercats, a parking spot for the season in the Winter Sports Club parking lot at the Christie base, and an iPad 2. The winner will get his or her choice of one of the prizes first.

“It’s really about getting everyone geared up for the ski season,” Berge said. “It’s going to be a killer season.”
