Steamboat Walgreens likely to open after new year

The traffic roundabout is open in front of the new Walgreens on Pine Grove Road, but the store is not expected to open until January. Construction will be complete Nov. 11.

— Construction crews working on the new Walgreens store in Steamboat Springs expect to complete the job Nov. 11, but the store is not likely to open before the new year.

Store developer Pat Corrigan said Tuesday that Walgreens invokes a blackout on delivery of new stores from Nov. 1 to Dec. 1, when existing stores are busy and the company is reluctant to commit employees to opening new stores during December.

"Walgreens will install store fixtures in November and December and open, I think, in January," Corrigan said about the Steamboat location. "They don't have enough personnel to open during the Christmas holidays, and Steamboat Springs is pretty far (from regional offices) in Denver."

Jeff Evans, superintendent on the Steamboat store for Waner Construction Co., said he would button up the site a week from Friday. The foundation for the new store was poured during the third week in June.

"We'll lock up and walk away for three weeks, then come back on about Dec. 5 when Walgreens will come in and start setting fixtures," Evans said. "We'll be there to help them hook up coolers," for example.

Corrigan said his contact with Walgreens is limited to the company's real estate division. He was not the original developer of the Steamboat Walgreen's store, having acquired the project with a partner in late May from the original development team for $905,000, including city approvals.
